Simeone expects ‘pure’ football test in Leicester return
It could have been worse for Leicester.
Tom Joel is sent to the stands against Atletico Madrid.
Supporters were involved in clashes with Spanish police ahead of their Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Simeone was full of praise for man-of-the-match Griezmann, saying the France worldwide was now a complete player who was upping his performances at the most important stage of the season.
Craig Shakespeare says Leicester City were unlucky during his side’s 1-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid at the Vicente Calderón on Wednesday night. “We take with us an important triumph”.
Some Leicester supporters managed to buy tickets in the home ends of the Vicente Calderon, while Atletico also had a neutral zone at the stadium.
Shakespeare is confident they will have a chance on home soil.
Manchester United legend Roy Keane talking on ITV’s Champions League Show said: “I think Atletico will be happy to take them back them back to the King Power”.
However, there was a blow when defensive linchpin Robert Huth was booked for a foul on Griezmann which rules him out of Tuesday’s second leg at the King Power Stadium.
The France striker, pictured below, was fouled outside the box by Marc Albrighton but referee Jonas Erikssson pointed to the spot – yet the Foxes’ European hopes remain alive. “But honestly, it is touch and go and we’ll have to look at team shape over the next few days”, Shakespeare said. “I think it is one of the major decisions in the game”.
“You can’t guess. It is a definite free-kick but outside the box”.
Leicester did not manage a shot on target while Jamie Vardy only attempted two passes all evening. Leicester has a flawless home record in its debut campaign in the Champions League, with four victories and only one goal conceded.
Similar to the last-16 first leg against Sevilla, Leicester were pinned back by their Spanish hosts as Atletico marauded forward with growing menace.
Griezmann coolly scored from the spot in the 28th minute by sending goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel the wrong way with a firm strike into the left corner.
Atletico have won only six of their 15 Champions League away games since 2014/15 and with that in mind they seem too short here at 2.05.
