President Trump Signs Bill Allowing States to Defund Planned Parenthood
On Thursday, President Donald Trump signed a law reversing President Obama’s last-minute attempt to force states to direct family planning funding to Planned Parenthood and other organizations that commit abortions. The bill, which only barely passed the Senate last month after Mike Pence was brought in for a tie-breaking vote, repeals a law Obama put into place that prevented states from withholding Title X family-planning money from abortion providers.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, counted Trump’s signature on the bill as the second of “two huge victories” she said the pro-life movement saw in a week. “Title X-funded clinics play a vital role in our health care system, with over four million women receiving family planning and preventive care at these clinics each year”.
Planned Parenthood said only 3 percent of the services it provides are abortions. Black and Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, saying they “led this effort in Congress”.
“This is the most hard budget I’ve ever seen”, said Rep. David Heaton (R-Mount Pleasant).
“Prioritizing funding away from Planned Parenthood to comprehensive health care alternatives is a winning issue”, Dannenfelser declared. The rule was meant to protect Planned Parenthood and similar organizations who, particularly after the heavily edited and misleading (and maybe illegal) videos released by David Daleiden, were being defunded by state legislatures.
Connecticut’s two senators were among leaders who hosted a forum on the fate of Planned Parenthood in Stamford Thursday, even as President Donald Trump moved to defund the organization. It now receives about $700,000 a year in Title X funds, less than 5 percent of its overall budget.
One more time for the people in the back – federal funds can’t be used to pay for abortions except in specific, extenuating circumstances. “Their leadership reflects the truth that women largely support stopping taxpayer funding of the abortion industry and redirecting funds to centers that offer real health care”. It’s one piece of Planned Parenthood’s budget.
The resolution is the most recent congressional review act signed by the president, a fast-track way for Congress to overturn regulations enacted by the previous administration on its way out the door. In the last six years, at least 13 states that use Title X grants have approved limitations that would keep abortion providers from participating in them, according to a Department of Health and Human Services report.
Republicans in Congress and legislatures around the country have targeted Planned Parenthood because its network is the largest provider of abortions, although about half of its affiliates do not perform them. She found out she had cervical cancer during a routine check up at Planned Parenthood.
An worldwide group of musicians, including Foo Fighters, John Legend, Bjork, Bon Iver, and Mary J. Blige, are putting together a compilation series of seven-inch vinyl records called “7 inches for Planned Parenthood” to raise funds.
Arizona gets three Title X grants a year.
Abortion-rights advocates, however, warned that the funding measure would deny as many as 4 million Americans access to family planning services.
