Highlights of Anthony Joshua victory over Wladimir Klitschko
Anthony Joshua asked Tyson Fury if he was keen on a bout following his win over Wladimir Klitschko.
Anthony Joshua is not afraid of anyone.
Klitschko entered this fight with questions surrounding his age and ability to pull the trigger.
27-year-old Joshua stopped his 41-year-old Ukrainian opponent, in the 11th round to snatch the WBA title from Klitschko while retaining the IBF and IBO world championship titles.
Most likely a fight between the two could not be possible until very late this year or early next year due to Fury needing to return to fitness, have at least one warm up fight, get his boxing license back in the first place and also address an ongoing situation with UKAD.
90,000 packed into Wembley Stadium as the national footballing stadium was transformed into a amphitheatre of battle between two of the world’s best heavyweight boxers.
Joshua has also already said he would be willing to fight the Ukrainian again, but beyond financial gain there seems little benefit for the champion. Joshua said. “Come on – that’s what they want to see”.
‘Well done Anthony Joshua, good fight, you had life and death with Klitschko and I played with the guy, ‘ he said. “I’m really loving this right now”. “A massive shout out to Klitschko, who is a role model in and out of the ring”.
“Crackin’ Fight! Congrats to both for giving the fans something to talk about!” He is the only current world champion who has won by knock-out in every fight.
“When there’s that many people in the arena, when I dropped Klitschko, that roar lifted my arms up as well and I thought “This is it, he’s not coming back”. “It’s really sad that I didn’t make it tonight”. “I tried to recover and then step it up in the later rounds, that was the plan. It didn’t work. But all the respect to Anthony and congratulations”, he added.
Bruno, who won his title at the third time of asking when he defeated Oliver McCall in 1995, said the bout had in an instant made heavyweight boxing the talk of the town after years of decline.
Joshua is not the unified champion at Heavyweight, though stiff challenges remain in fellow titleholders Deontay Wilder and Joshua Parker. It could include a rematch with Klitschko, who had it written into his contract that he would have that right should he lose.
Fury vacated the world heavyweight titles he won by beating Klitschko in an effort to focus on his mental health problems.
For Klitschko – who perhaps with an extra few punches might have finished Joshua – it could spell retirement, especially after his previous defeat more than a year ago by Britain’s Tyson Fury.
“But when you talk about legacy there are markets and boundaries that he (Joshua) wants to break”.
The possibilities are tantalizing indeed, and so are the prospects for stardom for Joshua.
After the sixth, the pace slowed a bit, but in the 11th round, Joshua landed a a vicious uppercut that hurt Klitschko, followed by a hook and he went down hard.
His knockout power is unquestioned, and after Saturday night so is his heart.
