Cincinnati Bengals draft controversial running back Joe Mixon at number 48 overall
Speaking of Cincinnati, they took Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon with the 48th overall pick, a spot that doesn’t match his talent.
The Bengals.com press release about the pick acknowledged that the Bengals “stunned the NFL” with the pick.
Although Mixon’s off-field issues are significant, he still remains one of the top prospects available in this year’s historically deep running back class.
“While I believe in second chances and giving players an opportunity for redemption”, Kraft said, via the Boston Herald. Mixon was not invited to the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine, as part of the NFL’s 2016 policy to not invite players convicted of domestic violence or sexual assault. And while Mixon did not serve time in prison, he was barred from playing for a year by Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops. The two announced a civil lawsuit last week and plan to move on from the altercation, which resulted in Mixon punching the OU student.
But because of the 2014 incident in which he punched a woman in the face, Mixon was among many interested parties wondering if and when he was going to be chosen. “I’m going to continue to keep doing the right thing around the community, on and off the field. I just grew up from the situation and moved fast and tried to move forward in a positive manner”.
“I’ve heard the [New Orleans] Saints, I’ve heard the {Minnesota] Vikings have done a ton of homework, pro days and a visit as well, the Cincinnati Bengals, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Oakland Raiders”.
The Cincinnati Bengals are receiving backlash over one of the team’s draft picks. “For me, personally, I believe that privilege is lost for men who have a history of abusing women”.
“Enough is enough, Bengals”, the editorial said. I’ve looked at (the incident) from every aspect.
Mixon’s skill set also perfectly aligns with what Doug Pederson and the Eagles are looking for in a running back-a versatile player who can run, catch and play on all three downs.
“For some of our fans, probably (they’ll) pause for a second”, Lewis said. They’ve come to their statements, her statement about how they both could’ve handled the day better. “But again, that doesn’t change it”.
Cincinnati added to its reputation for embracing players with troubled histories when it took Mixon in the second round.
So when Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis texted Schaffer as Baltimore was picking Houston linebacker Tyus Bowser at No. 47, he felt a surge of relief.
Mixon’s talent was obviously appealing to Cincinnati. According to ESPN he amassed 1,274 rushing yards on 187 carries and scored a total of 16 touchdowns not including his passing touchdown against Big 12 foe Kansas State.
The choice of Mixon opened some eyes.
Joe Mixon’s draft wait wasn’t as long as some suspected.
It’s time we as fans tried to teach this team a lesson. Gandy says she’s concerned his temper could resurface.
“Teach young kids, hopefully I can do older people too”, said Mixon. “But it is disappointing”.
