British heavyweight boxing star Joshua knocks out Klitschko
The British boxer had to recover from being knocked down for the first time in his career in the 6th round.
Lennox Lewis paid tribute to Klitschko for getting up twice in the 11th from devastating Joshua punches.
Joshua, who stopped the Ukrainian in the 11th round at Wembley, immediately called out fellow Briton Fury, who beat Klitschko on points in November 2015.
Taking to social media in the aftermath of Joshua’s stunning win over Wladimir Klitschko, Fury stated his desire to “dance” with the top division number one.
In another tweet, he added: “Well done Anthony Joshua”.
Fury has been inactive since his defeat of Klitschko having most recently struggled with depression, but has made plenty of noise on social media in the run up to the fight having returned to training in Marbella.
“I took a round off to get my breath back and then I said: “You’re in a bad place”, Joshua recalled.
If the fight was one of the best heavyweight bouts in recent times, the fifth round was one for the ages.
The biggest heavyweight title fight in more than a decade had a little something for everyone, and Joshua finished off in style.
Yet, although a 14-year age gap and Joshua’s fitness, strength and power eventually saw him floored twice and finally rescued by the referee in the 11th round, Klitschko still felt like a victor at the end of an exhilarating evening.
Joshua, The British star of the ring and the hope of the national boxing, has demonstrated an incredible technique.
“I thought he wouldn’t get up (from the knockdown)”, he said. “It’s really sad I didn’t make it tonight.” . “I was planning to do it”. “All the respect to Anthony – congratulations”.
American boxing great Sugar Ray Leonard described the encounter as an “an awesome fight, with two great fighters”, adding, “Lot of heart by both fighters”.
A rematch clause is in the contract, but whether he wants to take it up is a different matter.
Joshua knocked out Klitschko in the 11th round, sending the Ukrainian crashing to the floor.
“Tyson Fury, where you at baby?”
“We help out the village she came from and If I could do more on a large scale, I’ll definitely come down there and associate myself more with Nigeria”, Anthony Joshua added. Joshua asked. “Come on, we’re here, man”. Good fight. You had life and death with Klitschko and I played with the guy. I need to analyze and see what the heck happened.
The possibilities are tantalizing indeed, and so are the prospects for stardom for Joshua.
Joshua – the London 2012 Olympic gold medallist who was born in England to Nigeria-born parents – had never been beyond seven rounds, Klitschko has fought 12 rounds nine times.
His knockout power is unquestioned, and after Saturday night so is his heart.
