Eric Dier: Tottenham will start again on Monday
Spurs have likely seen their title hopes crushed yet again.Tottenham failed to gain any ground on league leaders Chelsea on Friday during its London derby versus West Ham.
Antonio Conte’s pacesetters can now secure the crown by winning two of their final four games – and they face Middlesbrough and West Brom before Tottenham are next in action. It was always a tough ask to overhaul Chelsea given the relentless pace they have set, and Spurs could scarcely have done any more.
After a tepid start, Tottenham should have taken the lead midway through the first half when Harry Kane’s 20-yard strike was pushed out by Adrian.
The 23-year-old concedes his side’s chances of claiming their first top-flight crown since 1961 are now virtually impossible, as Mauricio Pochettino’s men only have three games left to play in the campaign.
It was feisty, a Friday feist-night summed up in one first-half statistic: West Ham attempted no fewer than 16 tackles and succeeded in just one of them.
Alan Pardew has insisted that Chelsea have been the best team in the Premier League this season and will be worthy champions.
If they avoid a complete collapse against a relegated team, a team in the relegation zone and two sides with nothing to play for they will be champions.
West Ham kept Tottenham at arm’s length once it went ahead and the final whistle sparked scenes of jubilation around the ground.
“I’m calm but disappointed of course because we missed a chance to close the gap on Chelsea”, he said.
“You have to cope on the pitch and get the result that you need. There are many reasons that it wasn’t our best day”.
“The performance was just ok”.
“We lose, we concede a goal, football is a game, you can win and lose, unlucky for us we lose today”.
“We were not capable of doing more and the worst thing was the feeling at 0-0”.
“Every time we have needed to do it, we have done it”.
“We deserved it, we played so well”.
“Friday night., lights, sixty-thousand and against them”.
“There’s a lot of pride in this team and we don’t want what happened last year to happen again this year – and next weekend is a platform for us to try to do that”.
