Ann Coulter’s Berkeley speech canceled
The University of California at Berkeley was girding for potentially violent protests on campus Thursday, when Coulter was expected to give a speech, potentially on Sproul Plaza, a sprawling open area on campus known for gatherings and demonstrations.
Troy Worden, president of the Berkeley College Republicans, said at an outdoor news conference that the university didn’t provide a venue.
The Berkeley College Republicans who had invited Ann Coulter to the University of California, Berkeley confirmed the group cancelled her planned speech over safety concerns.
They proposed an alternate date – rejected by Coulter – when fewer students would be on campus.
Berkeley, which fostered the Free Speech Movement, would seem to be an unlikely place to reverse course on the idea of listening to different points of view.
Berkeley is not the only American university to face protests against conservative speakers.
The fracas over Ms. Coulter has unfolded in an already fractious atmosphere.
The city of Berkeley and the university have seen “three high profile incidents of political violence in recent months”, as The Two-Way reported.
Instead, she said this: “I am definitely giving the speech”.
“This is a University, not a battlefield”, Dirks told the university community.
“Of course you can protect us. If you can do so safely, report it to police”.
“This is the best way to keep yourself and others safe”. “We do believe that protesters will still come here”, Yao said. “We wouldn’t be sitting here and this wouldn’t be a story if the student group in question had followed procedure”, Mr. Mogulof said.
The group on its Facebook page calls itself a fraternal organization aimed at reinstating a spirit of Western chauvinism during an age of globalism and multiculturalism. It said it supports minimal government and is also anti-political correctness, anti-racial guilt and pro-gun rights.
The lawyer pointed to a letter she sent the university’s lawyer Wednesday morning, in response to his request for where and when Coulter was planning to speak Thursday. There have been numerous arrests, thousands of dollars in property damage and injuries.

Berkeley officials had previously cited “very specific intelligence” that Coulter and students could be endangered. “It’s resulting in a bad situation for our perception in the nation”.
