Nine months later: Trump and Duterte
As reported on May 1 by The New York Times, the initiative of the U.S. president was a complete surprise for these departments. In a telephone call, Trump also affirmed America’s alliance and friendship with the Philippines and its president, who has maintained an antagonistic stance toward USA security policies.
He’s also threatened to kill Filipino journalists, bragged about personally executing people and has spoken about his willingness to commit rape. In September, he compared himself to Adolf Hitler.
“The ambit of the conversation between the two leaders includes the expression of commitment of US President Trump to the PH-US alliance and his interest in developing a warm, working relationship with President Duterte”, Abella said. “We are watching in real time as the American human rights bully pulpit disintegrates into ash”, CT senator Chris Murphy wrote on Twitter.
No firm date had been set for the visit to Washington, D.C.
It was not clear if Abella was quoting Trump as praising the anti-drugs campaign specifically, or Duterte’s performance as president in general.
That’s right, a man with a reputation for having a penchant for murdering people he thinks are criminals without resorting to the protections of a judicial system spent the weekend lecturing Donald Trump about caution.
Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, tweeted, “We are watching in real time as the American human rights bully pulpit disintegrates into ash”.
The White House said late Saturday that Trump had invited Duterte to Washington during a “friendly” call, in which the leaders discussed the “threat” of North Korea.
It would be wrong to assume Mr. Trump isn’t raising human rights, “because we don’t put out statements chastising leaders at every call”, Spicer said.
Duterte also spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump over the weekend and discussed North Korea.
Duterte suggested Saturday to his American counterpart to back out from an intensifying standoff with North Korea not in surrender but to avoid risking a nuclear “holocaust” that could affect Asia immensely.
In a New York Times article, Human Rights Watch’s John Sifton says that “b$3 y essentially endorsing Duterte’s murderous war on drugs, Trump is now morally complicit in future killings”. The explanation from two aides, the debatable proposition that America needs the Philippines to help contain North Korea, is undercut by Trump’s warm embrace of strongmen in Turkey, Egypt and Russian Federation also accused of human rights violations.
Last year, the firebrand Philippine President branded then US-President Barack Obama a “son of a whore” for criticizing his war on drugs.
Mr. Duterte has made a stunning turnaround in the Philippines’ diplomatic policy since taking office by courting China to finance his ambitious infrastructure projects while berating traditional ally the US. Duterte has denied these allegations, reports the Guardian. I can not make any definite promise.
“I’m tied up”, he told reporters Monday in southern Davao city.
