New York Rangers: On the brink of elimination
Credit to Ottawa though, as they’ve found a way to hang around in the series, and are exposing the Rangers when the wheels fall off like they did again this afternoon.
Instead, after those heroics and the pair of overtime winners that followed, we are talking about a team that is now one win away from eliminating the New York Rangers and advancing to the Eastern Conference final. We gave space to an opponent that doesn’t need much space to get through you. Glass, a forward who was scratched in the first two games of the series, has brought an edge to the team.
The game got physical in the third period as the teams combined for 78 penalty minutes, with the majority of that coming in the final minute.
When Derik Brassard looked at his e-mail late Friday night and learned that Neil would be dressing, he got excited.
Boucher said his philosophy in 6-on-5 situations is simple: “Score”.
It has gotten to the point where it’s hard to think this isn’t boring a hole in the Rangers’ collective psyche – that is, trying to defend a lead when the opposition pulls their goaltender for the extra attacker. Neil had had enough.
The Senators were outshot 48-34 and out-attempted 83-79 in a Game 2 which harkened back to the wide open 1980s National Hockey League than the modern era’s system-laden game.
Coach Guy Boucher said he expects both Anderson and Karlsson to play in Game 5 on Saturday at Ottawa. “They came out and played their game to a T”, Anderson said.
But he scored in Game 4 against the Rangers, and made his presence felt with game-high nine hits in Game 5 on Saturday. During a scramble in front, he backhanded it by Lundqvist at 6:03.
Craig Anderson has let up 12 goals on 98 shots over the last three games he has played.
It was a insane, chaotic game. Instead of heading home looking to take a lead in the series, they needed two wins to even the series. At other times, both goalies were brilliant. In fact, they’ve scored the first goal in all five games this series.
Barely a minute later they scored again, when Nick Holden blew by Ottawa defenceman Cody Ceci and took a wrist shot that lightly ticked off Ceci’s stick.
Lundqvist made 32 saves while Anderson stopped 29 shots. Weve been good on the road all season long so I dont know why we couldnt steal a game in a playoff series against a good team but well find a way to do it.. “We had two good chances today and we were able to bear down”.
The Senators tied at 8:17 of the second on two fine feeds from Karlsson and MacArthur, the latter a fake shot sent cross-ice to Hoffman who buried the shot past Lundqvist.
The Rangers opened the game red hot, lighting the lamp early and putting themselves seemingly on their way to another dominant victory.
Ottawa cut the two-goal deficit in half 50 seconds after Holden’s goal.
It was now the Rangers’ turn to play catchup. The Capitals’ top-line center carried the puck up the ice, executed a give-and-go with Burakovsky and beat Fleury for the tying goal at 2:49 of the third.
In the third period, however, both goaltenders were hot.
Chants of “Andy!” followed a little while later when Anderson shut down Chris Kreider’s chance from in tight.
I was following along during overtime and the subsequent review for offside, one that was upheld correctly as Turris was in control of the puck when he crossed the Rangers blue line despite being in before the puck, and did get to see that highlight.
“I know it’s Kentucky Derby day”.
It was then Brassard’s time to shine, as the former Ranger tied the match at the 18:34 mark of regulation, forcing the overtime.
NY almost won the contest two minutes earlier as Michael Grabner knocked a pass from Kevin Hayes out of midair at 4:12 of overtime. We believe we can win the next game and force a Game 7.
Ottawa coach Guy Boucher praised the effort of Turris. “He makes plays a step above everybody, like most superstars do”.
