Brandon Boykin: Chip Kelly has trouble relating with players
According to texts Boykin sent Comcast SportsNet’s Derrick Gun, the defensive back thinks Kelly is “uncomfortable around grown men of our culture”. Boykin elaborated in a text message.
Kelly has revealed that the Steelers were determined to land the cornerback, even though Boykin was not initially happy at first about the deal. He likes to be in control of everything.
I think Boykin is a good football player, but we all have heard Chip talk about the importance of getting corners with height, and long arms.
Whether Philadephia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly has a particular bias against certain players due to race is entirely debatable. There were times he just wouldn’t talk to me. “You would walk down the hallway and he wouldn’t say anything to you”.
“The reality is, we got 90 guys, and you’re going to have to cut to 53”, Kelly said. Eric Rowe, JaCorey Shepherd, and Randall Evans all have a similar size/speed/playing style combination Kelly wants – they’re all six feet tall, or close to it, and can play press coverage. He signed, as I mentioned above, various black players. There were times when people wanted to relate to him better and it didn’t happen.
Everybody knows it’s the last year of my contract, and (Kelly) said, ‘I’m looking for you to compete for that outside spot.’ So that’s what he said. I’m sure once we get into preseason games and it’s real, I’m sure that will be another step.
“That doesn’t hurt me”, Kelly said in May about the accusations. It’s the fact that one person isn’t bigger than the rest of the team. He said that the cornerback was “stunned” when he was told of the trade on Saturday night. But for me, I’ve always been a guy of honesty. What isn’t debatable is that Kelly clearly has a bias against players brought to the franchise prior to his arrival.
“Like I said, it’s been nearly a year since I’ve been on the field, full speed, playing football”, Bradford said. “You can write that down in ink”, Kelly emphasized. “It more speaks to what our depth was at the position”.
Kelly said he had no problem with Boykin, and thought they had parted on good terms.
There’s also no question Kelly could likely get something of value for a guy who has proven to be a fairly consistent playmaker at the NFL level over the last couple of seasons. “Mike’s not going anywhere”.
