Silva, back from a fortnight out with a knee injury, was superb as City beat an inept Crystal Palace 5-0, for only their third win in nine Premier League matches.

Pep Guardiola praised referee Bobby Madley for disallowing Riyad Mahrez’s goal in Manchester City’s 2-1 win over Leicester City on Saturday.

The Brazilian striker’s arrival from Palmeiras in January has cast doubt over Aguero’s long-term future at City, even though the Argentine has scored 31 goals this season.

Leicester responded quickly to that set-back, however, with Okazaki arrowing a fine left-foot volley into the roof of the net from 12 yards following Marc Albrighton’s cross from the left, ensuring that the visitors had a lifeline heading into half-time.

The goal was disallowed, however, after Madley correctly spotted that Mahrez had kicked the ball onto his standing foot as he struck the penalty, meaning a free-kick was awarded in City’s favour. “You know we saw it with Griezmann in the semi-final and it stood, so you talk about consistency – it’s very hard to take!”

Guardiola has admired Iheanacho’s commitment and work rate during training – but there are question marks over whether he fits his style of play.

“David shot and I realised if I touched it then it would be offside”. When they scored it was quite hard.

It was a huge moment, but City didn’t give up and Mahrez somehow teed up Islam Slimani with five minutes remaining but his fellow countryman couldn’t find the target.

Leicester were more aggrieved by the other City winger, pointing out a seemingly offside Raheem Sterling had applied the final touch.

He made the correct decision to allow David Silva’s goal because though Raheem Sterling was in an offside position he didn’t touch the ball and his movement didn’t distract any opponents. It doesn’t matter if he’s going for the ball because I can’t see it.

“He’s gone for the ball so it’s a very frustrating decision because three times he’s offside”.
