Comey Memo Reveals Trump Asked Him to End Flynn Investigation
He also referenced the president’s recent suggestion that conversations with the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director may have been secretly recorded.
In Senate testimony last Thursday, acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe told lawmakers that despite Comey’s firing, there had been “no effort” to impede the FBI’s ongoing investigations.
News and Wall Street Journal released a new joint poll over the weekend, and the numbers suggest that most Americans don’t approve of how things are going with regard to James Comey and the FBI’s investigation on Russia’s election meddling.
Senator John Cornyn of Texas, the No. 2 Senate leader and a former Texas attorney general.
Multiple sources who have worked closely with the former director, including within the Justice Department, say Comey is known for his fastidious notetaking.
“When I chose to just do it, I said to myself, I said, ‘You know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made up story, it’s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won”, he said. “Quit investigating, damn it'”. “I wouldn’t want to answer a hypothetical question”.
Democrats have accused Trump of attempting to thwart the FBI’s probe and have called for some type of independent inquiry into the matter. At the same time, 38 percent of participants (including a polled Republican majority) agree with the Trump Administration’s explanation that Comey was sacked for mishandling the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s email scandal.
“We have got to make sure that these tapes, if they exist, don’t mysteriously disappear”, Warner said, adding that he hopes to have Comey testify in a public hearing before his committee. When Trump then asked for “honest loyalty”, Comey told him he would have that, said the Comey associate, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations.
Trump dismissed Comey unexpectedly on Tuesday.
Trump also told Comey that Flynn had done nothing wrong, and according to the memo, Comey said nothing to Trump about ending the investigation and agreed only that Flynn was a good guy. “I have my subpoena pen ready”, Chaffetz tweeted.
He also likened the move to the scandal that brought down former President Richard Nixon.
President Donald Trump said he thinks his late brother Fred would be “very proud” of what he’s done since taking office in January.
The Democratic leader also repeated his call for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign, saying that Sessions’ involvement in Comey’s firing might have violated his recusal from the Russian Federation investigation in early March and that he has asked the inspector general to look into Sessions’ role in Comey’s ouster. The incident was first reported Tuesday by the The New York Times.
The revelation also marks the second major challenge for the White House this week, coming just a day after a report in The Washington Post that the president disclosed highly classified information to Russian diplomats during a private meeting last week at the White House. The accuracy of the reporting was later confirmed by other news outlets including Buzzfeed, The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. The newspaper cites a memo Comey wrote following the meeting.
Trump accompanied that confession with self-serving – and manifestly false – assertions about having been assured by Comey that Trump himself was not under investigation.
We know all of this because Comey felt the president was improperly trying to influence the FBI’s Russian Federation investigation, so Comey kept a paper trail of memos documenting every conversation he had with Trump.
“If I thought there was inappropriate behavior by the President, sure”, Graham said.
