3-way race for final Champions League places in EPL
If Arsenal grab a score draw at home to Everton and Liverpool lose to Middlesbrough by two goals (scoring once less than the Gunners) they will find themselves level in fourth spot; tied on points, goal difference and goals scored.
“We’ve got in on the final day many times”, Wenger told BBC Sport after Tuesday’s game at the Emirates Stadium.
The Sunderland goalkeeper was unable to prevent Sanchez from delivering Arsenal the win, though, as the Chilean was left with an easy finish by Mesut Ozil with 18 minutes left on the clock, before adding a second in the 81st minute.
Laurent Koscielny is also rated doubtful due to a calf problem, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain remains on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.
The only way Arsenal realistically finishes fourth is with a Liverpool draw and a win against Everton.
In the Premier League, meanwhile, Arsene Wenger’s team haven’t come close to winning the title since they last finished first, back in 2004.
Arsenal have finished in the top four of every full season since Wenger took charge 21 years ago but, after Liverpool’s 4-0 win at West Ham on Sunday, they now need slip-ups from either the Merseysiders or Manchester City to help them maintain that proud record.
In the unlikely event of a Champions League play-off being required to separate both sides, these two results will need to happen.
Wenger remains under pressure to leave when his contract expires at the end of the season, with a growing number of supporters protesting against the Frenchman signing a new deal.
City (75 points, 36 goal difference, 75 goals scored) have the edge over Liverpool (73, 33, 75) and Arsenal (72, 31, 74).
They can go above Manchester City into third if Pep Guardiola’s side drop points at Watford, but most Reds are only focusing on seeing off Arsenal, who lie just a point behind in the battle for fourth. We will decide where we finish this season.
“I think we will all respect his decision, he gave a lot for this club during 20 years”. “You can see more and more, big teams are treating the Europa League with respect because it is a European trophy”.
“We had a hard patch after the Bayern game because it was hard to recover”.
Our form of late would put us in the driving seat should there be an unimaginable play-off match, but I think my heart would much prefer for Liverpool to crumble this weekend and we cruise to victory and seal it the old-fashioned way!
