President Trump holds ‘fantastic meeting’ with Pope Francis at the Vatican
The Catholic leader and the President held a cordial, if subdued meeting at the Vatican on Thursday morning (AEST), with no reprise of the criticism they aimed at each other during the U.S. presidential election. In the past year, the two men have swapped jibes and debated on subjects ranging from migration to unbridled capitalism, as well as the environment.
The Pope may have gotten through to President Trump.
The President is expected to attend a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting and a G7 summit at the conclusion of his meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican.
Trump told the pope that he “won’t forget what you said” following the meeting.
Francis smiled faintly as he greeted Trump outside the study and was not as outgoing as he sometimes is with visiting heads of state.
Since his November election, Trump has pleased the Catholic hierarchy by axing rules protecting tax-funded financing of family planning clinics that offer abortions.
Francis had criticized then-candidate Trump in February 2016, after Trump unveiled a key goal of his presidential campaign: walling off the US border with Mexico. In February 2016, the pontiff remarked on then-candidate Trump’s key proposal to build a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border, saying it was un-Christian.
It seems needlessly mean, however, to deny Spicer what could be his single chance to meet a sitting Pope.

After his visit to Israel, Trump thanked his hosts, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin.
