Trump says USA will abandon global climate accord, Obama blasts decision

Mr Trump does not “comprehensively understand” the terms of the accord, though European leaders tried to explain the process for withdrawing to him “in clear, simple sentences” during summit meetings last week, Mr Juncker said in Berlin. And India and China are likely to reduce global carbon emissions by 2 to 3 billion tons more than they’d anticipated just past year.
“We are firmly convinced that the agreement can not be renegotiated”, they added, referring to part of the Trump announcement which said Washington was open to negotiating a new agreement.

On the diplomatic front, German Chancellor Angela Merkel led the “remain” camp, publicly describing the deal as “essential”, and suggesting other countries would press ahead regardless.
During a trip to Europe this week, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed India’s commitment to fighting climate change and said it would be a “crime” to spoil the environment for future generations.
The president promised, however, to renegotiate the deal, saying: “So we’re getting out, but we will start to negotiate and we will see if we can make a deal that’s fair”.
“If the president wants to break the promises made to our allies enshrined in the historic Paris Agreement, we’ll build and strengthen relationships around the world to protect the planet from devastating climate risks”, the group said.
“This unprecedented diplomatic feat would never have been possible without the involvement of the United States of America”, she said in a statement.

Garcetti said he’s working with Los Angeles City Council members on a motion instructing the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, and other city departments, to adopt the principles of the Paris Climate Agreement as the policy of the city of Los Angeles.
“And Amazon said in a statement that taking action on climate change is a critical part of fostering “American competitiveness, innovation and job growth”.
“This action is totally contrary to their best interests: their health, security, food supply, jobs and future”.
So far, no other states have signed on to the alliance, though 61 American mayors also pledged on Thursday that their cities will uphold the tenets of the Paris Climate Agreement. The deal, negotiated by the US and other world powers, eased economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program.
Among the scientific community, Britain’s prestigious Royal Society said Trump’s decision would hamper usa innovation in cleaner technology.
He said: “The future is in newer, cleaner and renewable technologies, not in fossil fuels”.
