Some House Democrats mull over how to oust Pelosi as leader
Out of the four Republican-held special elections since Trump took office, Democrats walked away with zero victories.
Rep. Tim Ryan of OH who unsuccessfully opposed Pelosi for House minority leader said she was a political drag on other Dems.
“Look”, Goldberg interjected, “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the message” of the Democratic Party.
The result comes as relief for Republicans, who had grown concerned about whether their party, buffeted by the scandals that have plagued the Republican President, could hold the seat in Georgia’s sixth district, which became the most expensive congressional race in US history. In contrast, Ossoff failed in his attempts to portray himself as a centrist instead of the liberal he was known to be – more than reinforced by the ads painting him as a puppet of Nancy Pelosi and other well-known Democrat progressives.
One of the reasons for this string of losses is that the structural disadvantages Democrats face haven’t changed under Trump.
But no. Nancy Pelosi is still their party’s prom queen. She is a great leader.
Rep. Rick Nolan, D-Minn., said Democrats are not as good on delivering a winning message to voters as they should be. That’s the first one I think he didn’t write. “We’re losing the ability to connect with voters on what the hell they think about every single day”. Pelosi’s enduring role as a Republican punching bag revived debate over whether her leadership is an electoral drag on the party, or if she is simply a convenient (female) symbol for attacks on liberalism that the GOP would level with or without her. “But her time has come and gone”, Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-N.Y.) said Thursday on MSNBC. For his part, Ryan hasn’t said that Pelosi should step down, but he does say he is very concerned about the obvious decline of the Democratic brand.
“We are perceived in the country as a coastal elite party”, Ryan said. “Time for a new coalition”. “I am a strategic, politically astute leader”. The National Republican Congressional Committee said that internal data shows linking Pelosi to the Democratic candidate in Georgia helped the GOP win, according to Business Insider. As of right now, nonpartisan Cook Political Report ranks some 70 House seats that could be more competitive than this suburban Atlanta district. The new representative is then given an introduction by a party leader or a member of the state delegation before embarking on a short inaugural speech of her own as loved ones watch from an upstairs viewing gallery.
“I see their insult on my city as the bankruptcy of values on their party not to recognize the greatness of the city I represent”, Pelosi said. “Time to move forward and win again”.
She also dismissed the notion that the Republicans’ longtime tactic to hold her up as a partisan lightening rod drags down public opinion about fellow congressional Democrats and candidates.
In Georgia’s 6th Congressional District, Democrats spent over $20 million with millions more pouring in from outside groups. But to the extent that the Democrats use much of their energy bashing Trump, they are failing to connect with voters who aren’t addicted to Beltway scandals.
