DNC Chairman Tom Perez suggests Democrats could ‘take 50 seats’ in House
The fight for the Senate seat, deep in the heart of conservative country is a setback for Democrats who were hoping to make this election a referendum on the Donald Trump presidency, which is widely unpopular. “That would be very bad for the Republican Party”, he tweeted.
Republicans seized on the victory of Karen Handel in a special election in Georgia on Tuesday night, vowing to push through a vote on a revised healthcare plan as early as next week.
Pelosi should watch her back.
With Republicans controlling both chambers, and President Donald Trump in the White House, now isn’t the right time for new leadership, she said.
But they quickly did a 180 when the Georgia race, and a less publicized House contest in SC that the Republican won by 3 percent, turned into an easy 4-point win for Handel.
Mrs. Pelosi has been her party’s leader since 2003, overseeing losses in 2004, big gains in 2006 and 2008, then watching as her party slipped into its smallest minority in almost a century.
A defiant Nancy Pelosi made it clear she’s not going anywhere, brushing off critics from her own party saying “I think I’m worth the trouble”. “Do I think it’s fair that the Republicans playbook over the last four election cycles has been attacking Nancy Pelosi and demonizing her?”
Said Rice: “The Republican playbook has been very successful”. ‘Nor is it accurate. We have to address that reality’. This time I did.
Rep. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, who chairs the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee that invested millions in the race, argued in a memo to lawmakers, “Despite the loss, we have a lot to be proud of” and “we have a unique opportunity to flip control of the House of Representatives in 2018”.
Rep. Tim Ryan, who unsuccessfully ran against Pelosi in November for the House leadership post, also attended Rice’s meeting. “But, clearly, these ads using her, linking her to our candidates is still working”.
‘I mean, I wish it wasn’t true, ‘ he added.
“And what they hoped by making it a referendum on Trump was by saying Trump is bad, Trump is terrible, that would be enough to win and they didn’t”, said Schultz. That’s the honest answer, ‘ Ryan answered.
“Do you think people went to the polls and said, ‘Oh my God, we’ve got to stop Nancy Pelosi?’ I don’t think so”, said Rep. John Larson, D-Conn.
The result comes as relief for Republicans who had grown concerned about whether their party, buffeted by the scandals that have plagued the Republican president, could hold the seat in Georgia’s sixth district, which became the most expensive congressional race in United States history. “We have all the ads done”. Pelosi and other Democratic leaders insisted that they demonstrated important progress by coming in a close second, and have a good shot at taking back the House in next year’s midterm elections. Pelosi held onto her position by a vote of 134 to 63. “But my decision about how long I stay is not up to them”.
