Attorney General Jeff Sessions to testify at public hearing Tuesday
But officials said Sessions’s relationship with Trump has been strained since the attorney general recused himself from the Russian Federation probe in March. Sessions is especially important to the case because as the attorney general, he was Comey’s boss, and because Comey testified “the attorney general lingered by my chair, but the president thanked him and said he wanted to speak only with me”.
The appearance before the Senate intelligence committee comes one week after former FBI Director Comey cryptically told lawmakers the bureau had expected Sessions to recuse himself weeks before he did from an investigation into contacts between Trump campaign associates and Russian Federation during the 2016 election. It is not yet known whether the hearing will be public or closed. Typically, Senate Intelligence hearings on this topic have lasted about three hours.
President Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, says her father felt “vindicated” and “incredibly optimistic” following fired FBI Director James Comey’s congressional testimony last week.
Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat on the committee, who pressed Comey last week on why Sessions’ was involved in his firing if he had recused himself, argued that Sessions had no reason to seek a classified briefing. The request came, according to Comey, after a February 14 Oval Office meeting in which Comey alleges the president asked everyone, including Sessions to leave the room. While Trump told Comey it might be good to look at “satellites” in the Trump orbit, it might be inferred that Trump was suggesting he was willing to throw subordinates under the bus in service of clearing the president’s name as expeditiously as possible.
Sessions in March removed himself from involvement in any probe into alleged Russian election meddling but maintained he did nothing wrong by failing to disclose that he met a year ago with Russia’s ambassador.
What to expect: Sessions will be asked about his ties to Kislyak. “That’ll come up”, he said on Fox.
On Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver took a look at fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey’s Senate testimony that had the world watching and waiting for bombs to drop. Totally illegal? Very ‘cowardly!’
Sessions recused himself in March from the federal investigation into ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. “Unless he had a recorder in his pocket, this didn’t happen”.
“He likes to bring people up to date on what he’s done”, Comey Sr. told The Record.
The White House is hoping this week to drive a message focused on his agenda.
Finally, Oliver mocked Paul Ryan’s excuse for Trump’s interactions with Comey, that he’s just “new to this” whole politics thing. “No more game playing”, Schumer said. “#DOW up 16%. #NASDAQ up 19.5%”, Trump wrote in the first of two tweets. Comey welcomed any tapes during his hearing, and congressional investigators have asked the White House to produce them if they exist.
The attorneys general of Maryland and the District of Columbia plan to sue President Donald Trump.
But Comey left open the possibility that Sessions had violated his recusal. He’s “just having a little fun”, this person said of Trump’s tape antics. “You know, what were the circumstances that led to that, and why did he feel that that was appropriate?”
