A Decision From Gordon Hayward Could Come Today
Celtics fans might want to put those Fourth of July basketball fireworks away for the moment after it appeared as though Gordon Hayward, the Celtics’ primary free agent target this offseason, was bound for Boston.
A source confirmed to the Palm Beach Post that Hayward has not made a decision yet at this point and the reports of him choosing the Celtics “are all erroneous”. 242 years later there’s a new famous phrase roaming the streets of Boston; Gordon Hayward is coming, Gordon Hayward is coming.
With the Celtics, Hayward’s only big immediate threat will likely be LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
In his seven years with the Jazz, Hayward averaged a career 15 points per game and is eighth all-time in franchise history in scoring.
With that said, an interesting question still looms over the Celtics roster at the power forward position. Sources say the small forward has chose to commit to the Boston Celtics. One way or another, expect to see the Celtics add some depth at the power forward position before all is said and done. Ingles, Hayward’s best friend on the Jazz, humorously tweeted a coffee emoji, leaving people to assume he meant it in a “coffee is for closers” way. Isaiah Thomas and Al Horford were also on hand to help recruit Hayward to Beantown.
Boston’s big-name commitment on the free agent market is the team’s second in as many years.
After meetings with the Miami Heat, Celtics and the Utah Jazz, Hayward took his time to consider all options.
A contingent from the Jazz, including the recently acquired Ricky Rubio, met with Hayward on Monday in a 3½-hour meeting at Hayward’s San Diego home.
The story of Hayward and Stevens goes back years, of course.
