Federer, Djokovic enter last 16 at Wimbledon
While it seems odd for one of the world’s biggest sports events to take a day off in the middle of competition, there is a good rationale for the schedule and a reward for the restraint.
“Now, is it more this time around?”
All parts of the Federer game look to be working well ahead of a fourth-round match against Grigor Dimitrov, with the Swiss finishing on a tally of 61 winners and only seven unforced errors.
After a magical opening to the season, 10-time finalist Federer began the championship as favourite to land an unprecedented eighth men’s singles crown and has powered into the last 16 for an astonishing 15th time.
“I remember times when I feel like he’s beaten at least everyone at least once in a set”.
Novak Djokovic tackles France’s Adrian Mannarino while defending champion Murray plays another Frenchman in Benoit Paire.
“But she’s happy to be doing it – not on a weekly basis because travelling gets too much with four children, so I went to Stuttgart and Halle on my own”. Jared Donaldson, a 20-year-old American ranked 67th and making his Wimbledon debut, will face No. 6-seeded Dominic Thiem of Austria. Indeed, although the head to head is fairly lopsided in favour of Nadal, Muller has generally given a good account of himself when they have played, and fans should expect no different on Monday.
Second-seeded Djokovic, who won the Wimbledon title in 2011, 2014 and 2015, is bidding to win his first Grand Slam title since the 2016 French Open.
Three-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic roared his way into the fourth round with a 6-4, 6-1, 7-6 (2) defeat of unpredictable Latvian Ernests Gulbis. “It puts a huge smile on my face”. Having in mind that Dimitrov is playing his second best Wimbledon, he should be at least a worthy opponent.
Elsewhere, former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki came within two points of defeat against unseeded Estonian Anett Kontaveit before recovering to win 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 and reach the fourth round. Their most recent meeting was previous year on the hard courts of Indian Wells, which was again won Nadal, but it was a hard fought three set victory.
“Obviously grass is a very demanding surface for maintenance”. It was also avoidable not to be broken in the first set, but then I had to hang on to it with being down one breakpoint or two breakpoints maybe at 5-All in the first set.
“It wasn’t love at first sight!” In his first round match against John Millman, the Australian gave his best but ultimately could not get close to Nadal. “I’m pretty pleased with that”, Dimitrov said. “Not love at first sight, but pretty fast”.
“My game is better; my physique is better and I’m in a better place in my life and head”. The Grand Slam supervisor and assistant referee didn’t believe that there was either.
Asked how he could make Federer nervous, Zverev said: “I don’t know if it’s something I can do or he can do to himself”. “I did a lot of things well today”, Raonic said.
Tracy Austin, who played here in the 1970s and is now a pundit, said of the 16 remaining players that there are 10 who could win it.
“I mean, if you don’t hit hard and fast, he’s going to destroy you”.
