Thousands expected at NYPD Officer Miosotis Familia’s Bronx funeral

James P. O’Neill got a standing ovation at the officer’s funeral Tuesday when he asked, “Where are the demonstrations?” over the killing of Miosotis Familia (mee-oh-SOH’-tihs fuh-MIHL’-yuh).

“We must end it”, he said. But some police officers felt it the mayor should’ve been in the Big Apple to support the family of a NYPD veteran who had served the force for 12 years. “There is anger and sorrow, but why is there no outrage?”

De Blasio met privately with Familia’s family and attended her wake Monday. The funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

Police are still investigating Bonds’ motive, but a high-ranking official said it appeared to be nothing more than an “I just hate cops” motive.

The slain officer is survived by three children, a 20-year-old and 12-year-old twins, according to ABC station WABC-TV in NY. Her son urged mourners to tell someone – “anybody you see” – you love them.

In a tweet ahead of Tuesday’s service, O’Neill wrote that Familia was “an incredible mom, daughter, sister & NYPD cop assassinated exclusively for the responsibility she embraced”. The officer was was laid to rest a dozen years to the day after she joined the NYPD. Familia’s other daughter, Delilah Vega, is Peter’s twin. On Monday, in the New York Post, the officer’s daughter spoke about her mom giving her a quick kiss and hug before leaving for what ended up being her final shift.

The gunman, Alexander Bonds, 34, of the Bronx, was later and shot and killed by NYPD officers.

He then ran from scene but was shot and killed by responding officers when police said he pulled the gun on them. Bonds had sought psychiatric care just days earlier.

“This is a police officer who, on the Fourth of July, gave her children an extra hug, went off to work and never came back”, said Pat Lynch, president of the Police Benevolent Association. “And even worse because of the way she was targeted”.
