Lollapalooza evacuated due to risky weather conditions
Lollapalooza organizers say they made the decision after the National Weather Service and six onsite weather monitors predicted strong storms with possible lightning.
Lollapalooza was briefly evacuated Sunday afternoon as a strong thunderstorm passed through the Chicago area.
We don’t know exactly how many people were in the park when the evacuation call came around 2:30 p.m. CT, but estimates anticipated 100,000 for each of the three days – and it sure looks like that many.
Organizers are re-arranging the schedule but haven’t released set times yet.
Festival-goers were being ushered out of the Grant Park fest by staff and the Chicago Police Department to underground evacuation and shelter sites along Michigan Avenue, according to a statement from Lollapalooza media representatives.
“Our first priority is always the safety of our fans, staff and artists”, a spokesperson for Lollapalooza’s promoter, C3 Presents, said in a statement.
The music festival tweeted out the emergency information at about 2:40 p.m. “We regret having to suspend any show, but safety always comes first”.
