While I’ve played plenty of Splatoon 2 on the couch, I’ve also found myself getting in matches while doing everything from making coffee in the morning to waiting for my kids to finish their bath at night. You will need to ensure that you have linked your Nintendo Switch to your Nintendo account before you get started.
If you’re wondering why this is such a big deal in Japan right now, I think the release of Splatoon 2 at the end of this week just might have something to do with it.
Splatoon 2 improves on the original in a few other ways as well. The trigger that fires paint from various guns, brushes and buckets is held down nearly constantly so as to shoot at not just opposing players, but also any surface not already covered in the appropriate color. As far as shooters go, its unique movement mechanics stand out and make each match exciting. The bundled games include Zelda, Mario Kart, Snipperclips, Splatoon 2 and Ultra Street Fighter II. Unless you immerse yourself in the game’s single-player, known as Hero Mode, everything the multiple has to offer is up for you to discover. Splatoon has always been a series about choosing sides, and picking between the idols has become the game’s first battle. As someone who just wanted to play Splatoon with his mates rather some internet randoms, that’s fine, but I could understand if you felt a little short-changed here. But there are still enough imaginative additions for anyone who played the first game to death, especially via its odd, captivating supporting cast.
There’s more novelty here than just a fresh coat of ink, and that newness allows the IP to put its best tentacle forward as it prepares for the console audience it deserved the first time around. While motion controls are just as much a faff as they were on the Wii U, your more traditional control setup runs as smoothly as you could wish for. We’ll update this article as we get more information.
Splatoon 2, as previously reported, also allows up to eight Nintendo Switch systems to connect via local wireless to play Private Battles. Knowing how people feel about games, it is definitely worse to have a laggy or bad launch than to be delayed a few days. On Wii U, Splatoon never ran over 720p but for Splatoon 2 it’s been bumped up to 1080p when connected to your TV and still runs at 60fps.
Review in progress, temporary score of 8.3 (subject to change).
Pleasingly the game does have an ample single player campaign to get stuck into, and for new players it provides a great opportunity to get to grips with different weapons and play styles. In fact, there are no serious issues at all in terms of either the gameplay or content. Not the least of which is that Splatoon 2 remains so effortlessly and irresistibly entertaining.
For some, it happens when they are playing their docked Nintendo Switch and realize they want to watch Netflix or catch the latest Game of Thrones.
