British Open 2017: Updated leaderboard after Round 3
You can certainly make up ground in a round tomorrow, and we’ll see it happen.
Koepka didn’t bring his clubs during his two weeks out West.
Among other things, it got him into The Players Championship, where he tied for second.
Koepka, with no competition and barely any practice since capturing his first major a month ago, ran off three straight birdies and holed a tough shot from a pot bunker for eagle on the par-5 17th hole.
Spieth, who has been known to hit some tee shots sideways, then rolled in the putt for a birdie that got him under par for the first time in the championship.
“You have just got to stay patient”. It’s not quite where I need it to be to win the biggest golf tournaments in the world. More than half the field broke 70 on a course that was there for the taking.
Consider this: The U.S. Open ended on June 18.
The two-time major victor got off to a good start in search of the third leg of the career grand slam with a 5-under-par 65 at Royal Birkdale to grab a share of the early lead in the oldest championship in golf.
The 27-year-old was four under par through 13 holes before dropping a shot at the 16th.
There were plenty of golfers behind him. That constitutes heavy lifting in Koepka’s world.
“Everyone is giving us an ovation and it’s time to appreciate that, enjoy the walk, but also say thank you for the support that these crowds give”. “If I’m mentally recharged, my swing is …” You’ve just got to hit a golf ball, that’s all you have to do.
Already one of the toughest opening holes on Open courses, a strong breeze off the Irish Sea and a light rain made the 448-yard hole even more of a beast Thursday morning. At least it wasn’t on Thursday.
A combination of softened greens and still conditions – in total contrast to the gusts of Friday – led to plentiful birdie opportunities during round three. He knew worse weather was scheduled for the afternoon, and he had to head out.
“The back nine is playing really, really hard, so to birdie three of the first six and give myself that little bit of a cushion to play with was nice”.
He finished with three straight pars to move to 3 under for the tournament. No more blank stares after wayward shots.
“A awful lie in the bunker”, he said. “To get to 12, I think that would be a decent number to sit in the clubhouse at”. “Luckily, it went in”.
Spieth, who has won the Masters and U.S. Open, is trying for his first British Open title.
He wasn’t rusty. He was ready.
“I lined up way left with the whipping wind off the left, just to open the face and have [the ball] get anywhere around or over the green”, he said. I wanted to have those juices flowing. You grow up and practice having a putt to win the Open.
“I think I do okay”.
“Probably words I couldn’t use in a press conference”, the top-ranked Johnson said.
