Scientists May Have Finally Discovered the Cure for a Hangover
There’s a seemingly endless variety of traditional hangover cures, but researchers at Australia’s CSIRO now claim to have uncovered one that actually works.
Australian government scientists found that for those suffering the effects of the night before, the fruit significantly increased concentration.
The new research suggests that drinking pear juice before a night on the tear could dramatically reduce the impact alcohol on your body the next day. Thankfully it’s not dried bull penis or even a raw egg, but something far more palatable – the juice of the humble Korean (or Asian) pear.
The only catch? To benefit from the effect, you need to drink the juice (at least 22oml) before you start drinking.
“It appears that the factors in Korean pears act on the key enzymes involved in alcohol metabolism, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) to speed up alcohol metabolism and elimination or inhibition of alcohol absorption”, professor Manny Noakes, who led the study, said in a statement.
Scientists still aren’t sure what the pears do that make them such effective ways of avoiding hangovers.
“Overall hangover severity, as measured by a 14 item hangover symptom scale, was significantly reduced in the pear group compared to those having a placebo drink, with the most pronounced effect seen on the specific symptom of ‘trouble concentrating”. “In particular, reductions were seen in blood acetaldehyde levels, the toxic metabolic thought to be responsible for the hangover symptoms, with pear juice consumption”.
Of course, it goes without saying that the best way to avoid a hangover is to not overindulge in the first place.
