McCain Votes Against ‘Skinny Repeal,’ Bill Fails
Calaveras County Public Health Officer Dean Kelaita said that close to 15-20 percent of Calaveras County residents could lose health care if the Affordable Care Act is repealed.
Mr. Trump called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to end the filibuster, which requires 60 votes to advance most legislation. (Some even suspect he’s the ideal guy to fall on the sword for Republicans.) Meanwhile, Murkowski and Collins were unshakeable from the beginning, quietly voting no on all three of the Majority Leader’s attempts to muscle a bill through the chamber he controls. White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci said Thursday morning that Trump “may veto the sanctions” so that he can “negotiate” with Russian Federation, and incoming White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said later in the day that the president is still reviewing the final legislation.
“The greatness of our country is not measured by the well-being of the powerful but how we have cared for the ‘least of these, ‘” Bishop Dewane said.
McConnell will never publicly admit it, but he’s also likely relieved the bad bills failed and the Senate can now move on. Conservatives, who value personal responsibility, should be the first to argue that individuals should be covered by health insurance.
President Trump took to Twitter in order to attack Murkowski for her vote. The Republican health bills were supported by only 13% of Americans.
The American Conservative Union focused its ire on Collins, Murkowski and McCain, calling them “the three “Republican” sellouts (who) sided with liberals in the Senate to force this failed health care system on all Americans”.
McCain put his neck out there to shield other turncoat Senators from going on the record against Obamacare repeal. “Some of the suggestions that the president is making go way beyond what’s acceptable in a rule-of-law nation”, Graham said. But our ideas will be more popular. “The message was pretty clear”, Sullivan told the Alaska Dispatch News.
No Democrats voted for the GOP bill.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has played a very nuanced game regarding health care negotiations. So Democrats, led by Schumer, are saying they want to work with Republicans to fix the Affordable Care Act instead of dismantling it. “The high premiums we’re seeing right now are an indication of market failure”. All along, Democrats counted on those women to make McCain’s big “moment” possible, and they did not disappoint. Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said he would not hold any hearings on a replacement if Trump dismissed the attorney general. “Bipartisanship starts with them”. “The health care situation is the same as before”. His manuevering ultimately paid off, as neoconservatives were ultimately for stopping any kind of Obamacare repeal from taking place. Two others up for reelection are independents who caucus with the Democrats. “I’m proud of the vote I cast tonight”.
Sanders did so because he intends – barring yet another jolt of life in the repeal campaign – to release a “Medicare for All” bill before the Senate’s August recess. “We have been reassured the problem can be fixed, so are in a tentative support mode still”.
Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer of NY, minority leader, stressed that Democrats had been “locked out” of the recent health care debate and he warned that the Republican plan will “certainly mean drastic cuts” in Medicaid and would cause many to lose health care insurance. As I said from the beginning, let ObamaCare implode, then deal. But he would not copy the process Republicans had tried to use for repeal.
Conyers, meanwhile, was trying to make universal health insurance the party’s default position.
Finally, Enzi spoke: The vote would be postponed for four more hours. “We may not be in the minority much longer”.
