Wenger finally beats Mourinho: Arsenal claim Community Shield against Chelsea
Chelsea made a poor start to the season on Sunday, losing the FA Community Shield to Arsenal.
Some great saves from the Belgian, and he had no chance on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s goal.
The Blues enjoyed 57 per cent of possession and had three more shots at goal than their London rivals but were unable to find an answer for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s first-half strike.
But Chelsea, on the back of a long and exhaustive pre-season trip to the US, look under cooked and the surprising thing is that Mourinho has not done more transfer business as it is often harder to defend a title.
“Goalkeeper Petr Cech ended his 11-year stay at Stamford Bridge to join Arsenal during the close season and Mourinho has no problems with coming up against his former number one having already done so during his time as Inter Milan manager”.
A quiet showing from Eden Hazard left it to Ramires to drive Chelsea forward, the Brazil global curling wide from distance and heading a cross from Remy over the bar.
He was rarely called into action as Chelsea failed to make much impression against the Arsenal defense, but made a fine save to keep out Oscar’s second half free kick and looked assured in claiming several testing crosses in a tense finish.
After the match, Arsene Wenger snubbed a possible hand-shake from Jose Mourinho, who was standing near the stairs and was congratulating the Arsenal FC players over their well-fought victory.
The 52-year-old also commented on the lack of match fitness of some of his players, as players including loan signing Radamel Falcao have started training with the squad only last week.
Costa was the Swans’ destroyer-in-chief last season, netting five goals against Garry Monk’s team in respective 4-2 and 5-0 wins.
“I think this is a good memory for him“.
Ozil and Walcott were both instrumental in the build up for the only goal scored by Arsenal when the ball was played out towards the right side of the penalty area for Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The Frenchman said: “We abandoned nothing”.
“If you want to be pragmatic, like I normally am, I say in a simple way, they score, they didn’t concede”.
Arsenal tried to push for a second afterwards through Santi Cazorla and Keiran Gibbs but nothing materialized.
Diego Costa proved to be a huge hit during his debut season at Chelsea and the striker will only get better during the upcoming campaign.
