Fleet Commander dismissed after collisions involving 2 CT sailors
The most recent collision happened on Monday when a destroyer collided with a tanker near Singapore, leaving 10 sailors missing and five injured.
Navy officials say human remains have since been found in sealed compartments on board the ship, which is now in port in Singapore.
Speaking shortly after that incident, Aucoin told reporters, alongside the ship at Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan, that the loss of sailors under his command “is something we all feel”.
James G. Stavridis, a retired four-star admiral who commanded USA forces in Europe and Latin America, said the pause “makes sense, but it comes at a challenging time operationally”.
Swift announced he is traveling to Yokosuka Japan at a press conference in Singapore Tuesday and he is expected to meet with Aucoin there. He also said Malaysians assisting in the search had found a body, but it had not been determined if it was a McCain crew member. The Malaysian navy said one of its ships had found a body eight nautical miles northwest of the accident site. “It is clear that the damage control efforts of the crew saved the ship and saved lives”.
The McCain collision marks the fourth incident involving a US Navy warship in the Pacific this year.
The U.S. Navy is ordering all of its ships to briefly suspend operations following a collision between a destroyer and a merchant ship.
McCain conducts a patrol in the South China Sea, Jan. 22, 2017, while supporting security efforts in the region.
“I will examine the process on which we train and certify forces that are forward deployed in Japan to make sure we are doing everything we can to make them ready for operations and war fighting”, Adm. Richardson said.
A “comprehensive review” of practices would also begin. The strain on the Japan-based force may reflect challenges confronting other naval fleets, such as US ships in the Mediterranean, Clark said.
“This trend demands more forceful action”.
Swift said the Pacific Fleet will complete the operational pause by next Monday. His broader remarks suggested a focus on “how we do business on the bridge”.
The destroyer is named after John S. McCain Sr. and John S. McCain Jr., Navy Admirals who were the grandfather and father of Senator John McCain of Arizona. The Alnic sustained some damage, but no injuries to crew were reported, the Singapore government said. Earlier this summer, the USS Fitzgerald crashed into a Philippine container ship, killing seven American sailors.
Adm. Swift says they’re still hopeful they will find survivors. CBS News reported he will be relieved of duty Wednesday for loss of confidence after the deadly collisions.
