Minnesotans win more than $2.8 million in Powerball drawing
“I couldn’t drive or anything”. A coworker checked her numbers and told her she just won.
Her immediate plans are simple. “I was thinking about other things like my mother and buy her a house and try to get a better life for my family”, Mendez said.
One Powerball ticket among the millions sold across the country has made 53-year-old MA resident Mavis Wanczyk a very rich person.
Kamaljeet Kaur, the owner of Handy Variety in Watertown, initially said she was “very happy” when she was told by lottery officials that her store had sold the winning ticket.
Its officials said that single winning ticket which was sold in MA, claims $758.7 million (Rs 48,60,21,09,600) jackpot.
In the U.S., lottery winnings are taxed like income.
Winners should expect to pay 40 percent or more in taxes.
“My pipe dream came true”, Mavis Wanczyk, of Chicopee, Mass., said at a news conference Thursday afternoon.
John Hagerty, with Virginia Lottery said it’s still early and noted that winners often wait days before coming forward to claim their prize.
But it’s not just Wanczyk who will cash in.
You can only get the big jackpot if you match all five white balls (in any order) and you match the red Powerball.
In Wednesday night’s Hot Lotto drawing, two tickets matched four of the first five numbers and the Hot Ball and are each worth $3,000.
Winning less than that would have been fine with many, it seemed.
The mammoth jackpot accumulated over the course of weeks after 20 straight winner-less drawings.
A woman from western MA became a multi-millionaire overnight, after she won the Powerball jackpot! The jackpot at that time was worth $447.80 million.
The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292,201,338, according to the Powerball, and the overall odds of winning any prize at all are 1 in 24.87.
CT Lottery officials said someone in Connecticut won $1 million and another person won $2 million.
Both Powerball and Mega Millions tickets are available in all but six states – Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nevada and Utah.
Players have 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim their prizes. But it became even more hard recently – thanks to a rule change in October 2015 that tweaked the odds.
