MLB Game Turns Into an All-Out Brawl Between Yankees and Tigers
This time, Detroit’s Michael Fulmer hit Gary Sanchez with a pitch in the fifth, an inning after Sanchez had homered for the fourth time in the three-game series. Kahnle Yankees manager Joe Girardi were both ejected. He failed to do that.
In the home half of the sixth inning, Tommy Kahnle a reliever for the Yankees threw a pitch that sailed behind Cabrera.
Sanchez, meanwhile, defended why he threw those punches.
Everything in this ordeal is going to take a while to sort out – fines and suspensions from MLB’s side.
When Sanchez is healthy and hot, the Yankees have the best-hitting catcher on the planet. maybe the best hitter on the planet.
An inning later, New York’s Dellin Betances hit Detroit catcher James McCann in the helmet with a pitch, causing benches to empty again. Benches cleared and another brawl ensued.
Betances was ejected and so was Rob Thompson the bench coach for the Yankees.
Detroit reliever Alex Wilson was tossed after hitting NY third baseman Todd Frazier with a pitch in the eighth. The Tigers are in Chicago this weekend for series against the White Sox and the Yankees are in NY hosting the Seattle Mariners.
Both players were ejected, but things then escalated again in the seventh. Wilson and Tigers manager Brad Ausmus were automatically ejected.
Altogether there were eight different players ejected from Thursday’s game.
Martinez is no stranger to altercations, including during the 2003 American League Championship Series, when he threw Yankees assistant Don Zimmer to the ground during a brawl. If the Yankees-Tigers game was the beast, these two catches by Kiermaier were the beauty.
On Wednesday, Sanchez hit another home run and had three RBIs in New York’s blowout win of 10-2 over the Tigers. This may have prevented Kahnle from throwing at Miggy, which is where the game began to spiral out of control. According to the Detroit Free Press, Verlander appeared to be upset by Martinez acting friendly with Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez during one of the on-field flare-ups. But losing key players for multiple games, be it for health or disciplinary reasons, can be a tough blow to absorb at this point in the season.
There were peacemakers in Thursday’s brawl between the Tigers and Yankees, and there were flamethrowers. It’s time to fight for the ultimate goal.
