Titans owner gives $1M to flood relief
Tennessee Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk is donating $1 million to Houston Texans defensive end J.J. The initial goal for the fund was $500,000 and after surpassing that goal within a matter of hours he raised it to $1 million. From baseball, the biggest donation so far came from Houston Astros, a $4 million to help with the reconstruction of the affected areas. In the growing world of corporate social responsibility, the league could actually improve its image and generate more revenue by helping others during times of crisis.
To anyone asking where or how this money is going to be used, the JJ Watt Foundation will be using this money directly in Houston and the surrounding areas. “This is so much bigger than football”.
“Someone called to say they’d like to donate 11,000 packages of water, which is the most needed”, Connie Watt said.
Water is now the biggest necessity of the flood victims, so Watt’s fund has been loading trucks with water and other cleaning supplies to deliver directly to those in need. “We’re still going to practice; we’re still having meetings”.
“He checked in with us beforehand, kind of saying, ‘This is what I want to get going and doing and everything, ‘” she told WISN 12 NEWS on Monday.
JJ Watt started a fundraiser. The NFL canceled the game so the Texans players could return to their families. “I can not thank everybody enough”, the Pewaukee native said in a video posted to Twitter.
It started with a simple idea born of an even simpler urge: do something, anything to help people as rising floodwaters were overtaking Houston. Some guys won’t be able to go to their houses. He knew the damage to Houston was going to be catastrophic and wanted to do something to help right away.
The Texans rerouted to Dallas after their game this weekend and will travel back to Houston when it’s safe.
The devastation from Hurricane Harvey will be hard to overcome, but the energy industry is making an effort to ease the pain by donating money and time to relief efforts along the Gulf Coast.
