CBI Judge Jagdeep Singh Given Z-plus Security Now
Instead, the judge who convicted him was flown to the prison in the town of Rohtak where Singh is being held.
A judge on Monday handed out the punishment to 50-year-old Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in Rohtak town in Haryana, a northern state. Later, his counsel clarified the position.
Supporters of guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh battle Indian security forces Friday in the lead up to Singh’s rape conviction. He was ordered to serve two consecutive 10-year terms, not two concurrent ones.
One case involves the death of a journalist, Ram Chander Chhatrapati, who was shot in 2002 for allegedly exposing the rape cases against the guru.
He was convicted of raping two women at the headquarters of his sect, in a case that dates to 2002.
Due to the violence that aroused after Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s conviction by the CBI Court in Panchkula which left over 35 dead across Haryana, the Haryana Police while taking deterrent measures decided that sentencing of the jailed godman will not be executed in Panchkula. The court had convicted him on Friday at Panchkula, but made a decision to award the quantum of sentence at the jail where Ram Rahim is lodged owing to security reasons.
The CBI urged the court to treat it as the “rarest of rare case” and award maximum punishment. The prosecution wanted the case to be treated as “rarest of the rare”.
“No person is above the law and everybody should respect the verdict delivered by the court”, Khattar said.
“The government’s first task was to ensure that he (Ram Rahim) appeared before the court in Panchkula”.
The moment the sentence was announced, he broke down, fell to the floor and cried.
“She stayed their for two-and-a-half hours, after which the DG objected and she was taken away”.
Ram Rahim was immediately medically examined by doctors and found to be fine. The judge was brought to Rohtak by a helicopter from Chandigarh and landed at a helipad near the jail located on the outskirts of Rohtak.
Followers of controversial Indian guru Ram Rahim Singh walk outside the Dera Sacha Sauda ashram in Sirsa. Security deployment, including army and para-military forces, continued around the two campuses of the sect near Sirsa. We have shown restraint so far. “However, the convict committed breach of the gravest nature by sexually assaulting such gullible and blind followers”, the order read. Curfew continued in affected areas of Sirsa district.
The CBI filed a chargesheet on 30 July 2007 and the trial against Ram Rahim began in 2008.
“It doesn’t matter what they [the opposition] say, but we are satisfied with our actions”. “They were trying to gain time before sitting in the vehicle so that their men could spread the message that he was moving from the court”, Rao said.
