Students and staff at Toledo Public Schools are raising money for their counterparts in Houston, after the city – and much of its public school district – were devastated by Hurricane Harvey.
Arlington normally does a dress-down day each month, with students donating money to a local charity in order to dress down.
Lawmakers recently extended the state’s “District of Choice” program, which is used by an estimated 10,000 students statewide.
A year ago the district launched the online academies.
The University of Houston’s football team decamped to Austin to hold normal practices though the school decided late Tuesday to cancel its season-opening game at the University of Texas-San Antonio.
“There is that slight chance there will be a delay past September 11, but we’re working with all due haste to make sure we’re going to meet that deadline”, Carranza said.
“The most important thing, especially for young people, is to get them back into a routine, to get back to what is a new normal”, said OPSB superintendent Henderson Lewis Jr. in a released statement. The district says the additional staff will allow the district to build on the staffing choices already made by the current school board in support of social emotional learning and create a comprehensive K-12 system of prevention, with a focus on social emotional learning as a mechanism to prevent substance use.
“We’ll still have districts next week that can’t open and we know that”, said Lauren Callahan, a Texas Education Agency spokeswoman.

Students can pick up enrollment packets at any CCISD campus and will attend school in the zone of their temporary residence.
The new school year is here and it’s a reminder to kids and parents that the quality of their schools is often determined by their ZIP codes.
The first day of school was to begin Monday. In addition, schools across the District are receiving upgrades and renovations as a result of the bond.
This year, five schools have different start dates based on four different year-round tracks, said Glen Gonsalves, the district’s assistant superintendent. “But it will just take some time”.
In Houston, they can’t even say how bad the damage is because they can only get to 45 out of nearly 300 schools.
The district toured and posted posted images of Hilliard Elementary School Saturday, one of the many schools severely impacted and hit hard by Harvey-fueled floodwaters.
“I think that providing a two-week break after every quarter – in October, December and March – gives everyone the opportunity to rest and regroup before we go back”, she said.
