Ohio police officer pleads not guilty to driver’s murder
Deters has expressed concern that if the video footage before the grand jury has seen the video it could “taint the jury process”.
WCPO/Facebook Samuel DuBose, was killed July 19 during a traffic stop near the university campus by Ray Tensing, a 26-year-old white officer.
“I didn’t even do nothing”, DuBose replies. “You are going to see this more and more around the country where the prosecutors are very willing to say listen we need calm”.
“I just got my arm and my hand caught inside”, Tensing said a few minutes later.
“If this man doesn’t get convicted, they can shoot me in the head, too”, said Kimberly Thomas, DuBose’s friend.
Tensing’s attorney asked for a reasonable bond, citing his lack of criminal history.
The revelation that officers Weibel and Kidd provided the corroboration for Tensing’s account of the incident was met with anger by Brinson’s family members, who told the Guardian on Thursday that if both officers had been disciplined correctly in 2010, the death of DuBose might have been avoided. “If it were not for that video camera, Sam would be no different than all of the other [unindicted police shootings of black men], because the second officer was ready to corroborate every lie that the first officer said in the report”, Terina Allen, Dubose’s sister, said at an emotional press conference.
Tensing had claimed that he was dragged by the vehicle, prompting him to shoot, but footage showed that he attempted to open Dubose’s auto door, then nearly instantly shoots the motorist in the head.
Tensing was fired from his post after his indictment, and university spokeswoman Michele Ralston confirmed Thursday that officers Kidd and Lindenschmidt were placed on paid leave during the investigation. Fitch told KMOX’s Mark Reardon he watched the officer’s body camera video twenty timesand is not convinced, as the prosecutor is, that the officer intended to kill the motorist.
“He purposely killed him”, he said. “He wasn’t dealing with someone who was wanted for murder”, Deters said.
“License plate pullovers should not result in loss of life”.
“I mean this is, in the vernacular, a pretty chicken crap stop”. Cincinnati was convulsed with riots in 2001 after police shot an unarmed 19-year-old black man who was wanted for traffic violations. Incidents such as this don’t keep surfacing unless checks and balances are insufficient.
But the university said it stands by its decision. Brinson died and his family sued, ultimately settling with the police department and the hospital for $638,000.
DuBose’s death is the latest in a string of controversial killings of people by police that include Tamir Rice in Cleveland, Michael Brown in Ferguson, and Walter Scott in North Charleston, South Carolina.
“People want to believe that Mr. DuBose had done something violent towards the officer – he did not”. “Ladies and gentleman, this is a courtroom”, she said sharply.
The prosecutors’ office released video from their body cameras showing the immediate aftermath.
