Trump is anticipating phasing out DACA program although verdict is not finalized
There will be a six-month delay, according to the Associated Press.
Across the country, undocumented immigrants and their allies are taking to the streets to protest President Donald Trump’s decision to phase out protections from deportation for almost 800,000 young immigrants known as Dreamers.
The program was created during the Obama Administration but throughout President Trump’s campaign, he’s vowed to end the program.
“Our dreamers are willing to travel any length or distance to realize the potential in this country”.
“They shouldn’t be very anxious”, Trump said in an ABC News interview in January when asked how his policies would affect the Dreamers.
After teasing #Dreamers for months with talk of his “great heart”, @POTUS slams door on them. Dreamers and immigration activists held a rally at the Federal building in Chicago Monday, with plans for additional protests Monday night.
Democrats such as Senator Al Franken of Minnesota also wanted the programme to continue, calling the reported decision a ” disgrace”.
Twenty state attorneys general said in July that they will use “all appropriate means” to defend the program.
Though Trump is due to formally announce his decision on Tuesday, sources have cautioned that he could still change his mind.
In April, however, Trump said dreamers-the young immigrants who are protected by DACA-should “rest easy”, telling the AP that he was “not after the dreamers”, but “after the criminals”. The group, led by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, sent Trump a letter earlier this year threatening a lawsuit if the program wasn’t in the process of being struck down by September 5.
Donald Trump has also suggested he is torn over the DACA question, saying he does not favour “punishing children”.
Both elected officials publicized their intentions to sue Trump over a DACA withdrawal on Twitter, too.
“But you have some absolutely incredible kids – I would say mostly”.
