Hurricane Irma to ‘devastate’ United States as it hurtles toward Florida

A veer to the north-northwest would follow a path like the one Hurricane Hugo took in 1989. Some Caribbean Islands are on high alert as it heads their way.

Noel Marsden said he, his girlfriend, her son and their dog left Pembroke Pines north of Miami with plans to ride out Irma in Savannah, only to find the city was also shutting down because of Irma.

With winds that peaked at 185 miles per hour (300 kph), Irma was the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic.
