Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE connectivity launched at $399

As well as cellular data the Apple Watch Series 3 is also more powerful as it features Apple’s third-generation architecture featuring a faster dual-core processor.

Despite the addition of the cellular connectivity, the new generation Apple Watch is nearly similar physically to the Series 2. The Series 3 prices start at $329 for the non-cellular model and $399 with the cellular model. Both can be preordered on September 15 and can be found in stores on September 22.

It uses an e-SIM and the same phone number is used across both the Apple Watch Series 3 and your iPhone. The watch will work with all four major carriers in the US.

“The Apple Watch is now the number one watch in the world”, Apple chief executive Tim Cook told the media event, the first at the company’s “spaceship” campus in Cupertino. That $70 extra cost of the new series watch could buy much more useful capabilities including the ability to stream music from Apple Music.

Although it did not announce specific plans to bid for exclusive streaming rights, Apple is believed to have eyed live sports as effective ammunition in attracting subscribers to its services. If you were hoping for an all-new design this year, you may be somewhat disappointed: the Series 3 still has the same display and look as the Series 2, for instance.

The Stuff office is a little underwhelmed by the red crown. The phones are said to come in three colors: space gray, silver, and gold. The non-cellular version is only available in aluminum.

The Series 3 supports several watch faces, as expected. Calls from the watch are made by touching a button on the watch and up comes the typical interface you will see on the smartphone.

The Heart Rate App functionality will be included in the OS4 update due 19 September. You still get built-in Global Positioning System, ambient light, heart rate sensor, accelerometer and gyroscope. Apple will not charge a punishing premium for 4K resolution content over regular HD.

To render best of performance, Apple has even started a collaboration with Stanford medicine and American Well. That’s understandable, as adding cellular connectivity is quite the power drain, but it’s limiting in terms of all-around health tracking.

Software-wise, Apple Watch 3 will run on watchOS 4. In its first video, Apple created a film about actual stories that real customers sent in to the company about their experiences with the Apple Watch.
