Paul Pogba likely to be sidelined with hamstring injury
Wayne Rooney will return to Old Trafford tomorrow with his reputation somewhat diminished, but no less of a Manchester United icon.
The 24-year-old limped off after just 18 minutes and left the Old Trafford on crutches during United’s comfortable 3-0 win over Basel in their opening Champions Trophy clash.
Red-hot striker Romelu Lukaku will continue in attack against his former club but midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan could be given a break after a disappointing midweek display.
“Show respect, don’t go over the top, but if you score a goal then celebrate”.
Ibrahimovic, who missed United’s Europa League final victory over Ajax due to his injury, said his natural impulsiveness would have had him back playing by now, but he had had to restrain himself.
It had all started so well.
Everton manager Ronald Koeman has also spoke out about the return of Rooney. He allows the likes of Pogba and Fellaini to push forward, while he would be given the chance to take up a free role next to the more defensive-minded pairing of Michael Carrick and Matic. Everton were crushed 3-0 by a young side with very little European experience, and the alarm bells are well and truly clanging now.
Wayne Rooney’s return to Goodison Park from United – replacing Lukaku – has not gone as well as the Belgian’s move despite scoring in his first two league matches this season.
I thought I would get a lot of game time here, more than I possibly would at Manchester United, and that was a massive factor in my decision.
Last three iterations of this league fixture haven’t witnessed more than 2.5 goals.
United have made a flying start in front of goal so far this season with 16 goals in six games across all competitions, having scored 54 throughout the last campaign.
Koeman failed to land an out-and-out replacement for Lukaku in the summer, with Wayne Rooney the only player to have found the net for Everton in their opening four games, and Koeman accepts Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Sandro Ramirez can not be asked to assume Lukaku’s role.
There is no question Manchester United have started the season on a positive note. “I think fans recognise that”.
United are trading at [1.37] for the outright win, but they can be backed -1.5 on the Asian Handicap at [2.1].
“The more things change, the more they stay the same”.
