Clemson D makes its case as country’s best
A huge difference between the Jackson who awed the college football world past year and the one who is again performing at a high level this fall, is that he is going through his passing progressions. The junior defensive end racked up four of Clemson’s 11 sacks-one shy of the school record-during last weekend’s 14-6 win over Auburn. He aims to harness the “video-game numbers” of the hyper-productive Jackson the way get-back coach, Adam Smotherman, keeps the hyper-intense Venables inside the lines during games. “He ain’t really talk to me too much about me coming there, but we had conversations about it and I was like, ‘I might come there, because you my cousin and we’ll be good together.’ We never played with each other, so it was kind of a thought”.
The offense was led by junior quarterback Kelly Bryant who grabbed 181 passing yards and rushing for 59.
Clemson defensive end Clelin Ferrell said those who went him against him previous year are more wary this time.
Jackson enters the rematch as mesmerizing as ever, having averaged 505 total yards, with a total of eight touchdowns, in two road wins this season, and appears capable of becoming the second-ever two-time Heisman victor.
“I may just save it to celebrate when our quarterback, Lamar Jackson, wins his second Heisman”. He also became the second player since 2000 to account for at least 1,000 yards of total offense in back-to-back seasons. He might not be the deep threat that Washington is, Ateman runs well, also. They held the Tar Heels to just 17 rushing yards, and just 48 if it excludes the loss of yards from quarterback Chazz Surratt’s sacks. Jackson finished 27-of-44 passing for 295 yards and one touchdown, adding 162 more yards and two scores on 31 carries.
“If Louisville is going to win this football game, it’s not going to be just Lamar Jackson”, Herbstreit said. Jackson made the pitch and catch look easy, and it was set up because Louisville had lulled the North Carolina defense to sleep with so much work underneath. “First of all, we should have confidence that we’re there and that we can play, but it is up to us to win the game”. Both of the team’s touchdowns against the SEC’s Tigers came courtesy of Kelly Bryant’s legs. It wasn’t until Bryant took a hard hit that knocked the wind out of him and went to the sidelines for a few snaps that Clemson’s offense got going.
Baker Mayfield (+400 to win the Heisman) has already earned his Heisman moment, going into Ohio State and leading his Oklahoma Sooners to a win as seven-point road underdogs.
If they fail, it’ll once again be up to Bryant to carry a big burden in that offense, both through the air and on the ground.
“He was in college when I was in my a year ago of (high school) football, so that’s when it kind of started”, Mullen said. Alexander suffered a knee injury in the Cardinals’ opening game against Purdue. If it isn’t, this game could be worth your time. I think Jackson may well be the most exciting college football player ever, and I think he wants to put all that Watson-should-have-won-the-Heisman business to rest once and for all. The defensive line is as talented as any in the nation, and while inspirational linebacker Ben Boulware is gone, Kendall Joseph has stepped in well to fill the void in what is still an athletic linebacking corps.
Dabo wasn’t just whistling “Dixie” when he said that UofL is “crazy good”.
LSU’s defense has looked good early on and it gets back star Arden Key this week.
While Jackson’s big-play ability will take center stage, the Cardinals have to be able to run the football and control the line of scrimmage. Armed with more information, let’s pick some winners for the 10 best games of Week 3…
