Flying ants invade Nottinghamshire
As some ants begin to fly, other sexually active males and females detect their chemical smell and join them. They have posted images as well on social media sites showing their encounters with ants.
The males are only produced during flying ant season and don’t do any work in the nest: their only job is to mate with new queens, and they only live for a day or two after the mating flights. However, a recent study by the Royal Society of Biology showed that flying ant days can stretch over a month.
But it’s not something that amuses the queen ants and they try to escape the males. But rather than being a tease, she’s simply ensuring her suitor is fit and fast enough to catch her. It drops its wings and starts to develop a new colony.
The natural phenomenon sees the process take place simultaneously across all colonies.
Swarms of flying ants invaded Nottinghamshire leaving people shocked and surprised. Therefore, many people have been reported about the swarms of flying insects. “If you look carefully at flying ants you will see some are much larger; these are the queens”.
A flying ant swarm can last for a whole day, with the insects reproducing in their billions.
