Judge Adalaide Byrd could be removed from UFC 216
The pundits, however, quickly began discussing a potential rematch between the boxers to get an answer to the question left unanswered by judges in Las Vegas.
Dave Moretti gave it 115-113 to WBA, WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight champion Golovkin, while Don Trella had it as a 114-114 draw.
With Saturday night’s super-fight between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin overshadowed by Adelaide Byrd’s 118-110 scorecard (see below), boxing is having to endure more criticism at a time where it should be revelling in one of the fights of the last five years.
Golovkin occupied the center of the ring mostly, while Alvarez was more comfortable near the ropes, content to counterpunch. This was a real fight.
“There’s no problem with that, but I would rather we do the rematch directly because I would hate for him take another fight and get injured or lose”.
“I still have all the belts”, Triple G said. That was a great fight with two powerful guys who went in there showing heart, granite chin, everything.
HBO boxing chief Peter Nelson said he thought a second fight would do even better than the first, and indicated a date next May would be ideal. “I want to thank all my fans”.
Despite the draw this was Alvarez’s coming out party in the higher weight class as he delivered a performance that established himself as a bona-fide middleweight.
“I did get a little deja vu”, Donaire told CBS Sports during Monday’s appearance on the “In This Corner” Podcast.
Golovkin used his techniques to land powerful punches to Alvarez’s body and head. “But he is not the monster everybody is talking about. I feel frustrated over this draw”.
Whether the result of GGG-Canelo fight was a simple miscarriage of justice or well-executed money grab, we’ll never know.
For years, boxing fans clamored for a fight that many prognosticators believed to be a stylistic matchup that could rival that of the heavyweight fights from boxing’s golden age.
Earlier Cotto said he was retiring after December and is looking for a big fight.
“I think Canelo actually did a pretty good job”, Valdez said. Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) absorbed some heavy blows, and responded with some terrific, perfectly placed counter shots to momentarily halt Golovkin’s attack.
Straight bets on the victor of the fight have to be refunded when a draw is declared.
Two fights that would have been flawless for Boardwalk Hall are headed to NY. I wanted a “big drama show” tonight, I pressed him in every round, and I controlled the ground.
“I have no doubt about it in my mind”, Alvarez added.
“Gennady wants to fight before May but, if they commit to a rematch, we’ll have to see if that makes sense. Canelo was very resilient”, Sanchez said.
Byrd’s one-sided score was heavily criticized by Golovkin who called it “unbelievable”.
Most will lash out at De La Hoya since he does represent Canelo.
