Iranian President Calls US ‘Most Isolated Country’ at UN General Assembly
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told Fox News on Tuesday that Trump’s assessment of the nuclear agreement “is that it’s a not stiff enough agreement, it doesn’t slow their program enough and holding them accountable is hard under the agreement”. At a news conference Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed hope that the deal could be upheld, noting that the US does not appear to have an alternative.
Though highly critical of the deal, the Trump administration has largely respected it.
He was speaking at a press conference in Tehran broadcast live on state TV after returning from the United Nations General Assembly. “I’ll let you know what the decision is”, he said.
KELEMEN: But what does he want instead?
Some pointed to the difference in the crowd for French president Emmanuel Macron, who delivered his speech the day before.
In an interview with “Face the Nation” last Sunday, Tillerson acknowledged that Iran is in “technical compliance” with the deal that was negotiated between the USA, the Iranians, and five other global powers. He spoke through an interpreter.
However, Macron still believes this deal “remains the best way to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear bomb”, but he also admitted “it could be improved”. That is not the situation today. Find us on Facebook too!
“There’s a small period of time and we’re going to see what we can do”, Trump said. And she also said that there was a general sense in the room that there are so many other crises around the world, including North Korea, that the global community can’t afford to dismantle an agreement that’s working.
“We stopped any monitoring, any discussions with them, and what’s the result?”
A spokesperson added: “The prime minister stressed that it was important that the deal was carefully monitored and properly enforced”. A better deal is pure fantasy, he tweeted.
Federica Mogherini, the European Union foreign policy chief, agreed with the Iranian diplomat in saying that “there is no need to renegotiate”. U.S. officials said Trump is still weighing his next moves and plans to announce his intentions next month.
“It belongs to the worldwide community in its entirety and not only one or two countries”, he said of the deal otherwise known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. “Due to this, it belongs to the entire worldwide community”.
