Manning still in driver’s seat for Broncos
Manning: “Coach Kubiak said it last night”.
Yes, perhaps the most immobile of NFL quarterbacks, Manning and new head coach Gary Kubiak seem to believe that the bootleg can be a unsafe weapon for the Broncos.
Though Manning declined to reveal specific things his father taught him or tips he now teaches young quarterbacks at the family’s annual passing academy, to Manning, throwing well on the run is more about technique, footwork and body position than it is about pure athleticism. “I think he’ll be caught up to speed pretty quickly”.
Bottom line: plenty of rest for Manning, a notorious workhorse who’s long been loath to give away any snaps. “I think that makes a lot of sense”.
It’s clear that Elway’s hiring of Kubiak – beyond their mutual trust – was an attempt to save the final years of Manning’s career with a scheme better aimed at surrounding the 39-year-old arm with more help. A handful of teams from our region will hit the practice field at the stroke of midnight; however, most of our local teams will practice in the mid-morning before the heat of the day. “It’ll be good for the team and for Brock to be able to go out there every third or fourth day and prove to the guys he can run the football team also”. His big payday came just 48 hours after he learned President Barack Obama had cut short his mother’s federal drug-trafficking sentence. “I know that the linemen and the linebackers, these guys that are beating on each other, I know they certainly appreciate it”.
“I’m exhausted”, safety T.J. Ward said Saturday. “So, I think he understands that situation and he’ll be good with it”. Friday, Manning was eager to embrace the unfamiliar – like lining up nearly exclusively under center through the duration of the two-hour practice, even rolling out of the pocket and throwing on the run.
“Well, we’re going to evaluate him through training camp and evaluate him through the preseason”, GM John Elway said. He achieved this when he had the keys to run everything on offense how he deemed fit but now he’s going to have to follow what he’s told to do and hope everything goes according to the Broncos’ offensive plans. I do that in the red zone a lot-throwing on the run and sprinting out.
“He’s been good at kind of helping me, asking me on protections what I was doing and what I was looking at”, Sambrailo said. Make no mistake about it, he’ll be missed sorely as Thomas was one of Manning’s security blankets to keep those chains moving or get hit in the end-zone for a touchdown. “Work is not a problem”. “What I can say, late in my career, that was my best friend, the running game”.
Manning also discussed Gary Kubiak’s play-calling system.
“Obviously, it’s going to be a little bit of an adjustment but you’ve got two, smart, bright offensive football minds that are competitive and wanting to win”, Elway said. “I’ve always worked it through the years and feel like I can do a pretty good job of that”.
