John Oliver wants to see Washington, DC become the 51st state
John Oliver leaped to the defense of Washington, D.C. on Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, as the District itself isn’t sufficiently represented on The Hill.
“The people of D.C. clearly deserve a greater voice in their own affairs”, Oliver said during his 17-minute segment on the issue.
“In 2009, a bill to give D.C. a vote was introduced in the Senate, and the Senate did the most d***ish thing imaginable”. The Last Week Tonight host showed how all of that can be hard for Washington, D.C., not only because residents see it as undemocratic, as expressed through their license plates that read “Taxation Without Representation”, but also because Congress can step in and pass riders that change laws or prevent important measures from passing.
That addition was an amendment that would have repealed all gun-control laws in the city.
“The only time trading away D.C. abortion would be acceptable is if “D.C. Abortion” is a rare 1950s comic book and you are getting “Marvel’s The fantastic Mammogram” in return”, Oliver asserted.
Think that all countries treat their capitals like the U.S. treats D.C.?
Singing alongside a group of children, Oliver puts a new spin on the classic 50 states song, whether you’ve heard it from Lamb Chop or the Animaniacs, that finds plenty of space to include Washington, D.C. Just don’t tell Floridians about what finding that space means for their state.
Well then let’s all kick out Florida ’cause no one thinks they’re great.
