Rain Kills 22 in Mumbai Train Station
Thakkar said he alerted the local police at 10.34 am but by the time they arrived the bridge was vacated. More than a dozen were seriously injured and being treated at nearby hospitals, local television channels reported. Despite multiple warnings about the possibility of a disaster occurring, no step was ever taken.
President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed condolences to those who have lost their lives in the incident.
S. Jaykumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Central Region), Mumbai informed that overcrowding at the station lead to stampede.
The stampede took place after the cloudburst caught commuters off guard, prompting scores to scurry for cover under the roof of the station’s pedestrian overbridge, said Akash Koteja, one of the injured.
The Union Railway Minister Piyush Goel has ordered a high-level inquiry into the matter and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced an exgratia of Rs 5 lakh to the families of those killed in the mishap.
According to Dinesh Kumar, who was travelling to Parel, said that the rains added to the problem. “Please contact the blood bank at KEM” The doctors said that after the message circulated more than 250 people registered immediately for blood donation and answered innumerable calls wanting to donate blood.
“While former Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had inaugurated the Parel terminus work last year, it is only supposed to be completed two years from now”, a senior railway official said.
Officials attributed the stampede and the deaths to heavy rainfall which contributed to more people using the already overcrowded bridge for shelter.
“Around 1.42 lakh posts for safety staff remain unfilled across India, which, experts say, is a major concern and clear case of official apathy”, Dev said.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is overseas, announced a separate probe into the incident and compensation for the victims, most of who were identified by late evening.
