Elon Musk outlines ‘aspirational’ plan to colonize Mars from 2024
A large scale rocket that is intended for travel to Mars and perhaps other planets in our solar system.
The presentation also focused on other uses for the rocket, including for use going to the moon and building a permanent base.
He also said it would allow us to travel anywhere in the world in “under an hour” for the same price as an economy airline ticket.
SpaceX founder Elon Musk says travel from New York City to Shanghai in just over 30 minutes is possible with rocket travel. “You can get to most long distances in a half hour”, he said.
It will replace the current Falcon 9 rocket which is only partially reusable. The rocket would reportedly reach a speed of about 27,000 kilometres per hour at its peak.
Elon Musk’s mission to colonize Mars is underway. This form of travel, he claimed, can be funded by using the same spacecraft for all its missions, including high-paying jobs delivering satellites into orbit and supplying the International Space Station.
“It’s really insane that we build these sophisticated rockets and then crash them every time we fly”, Musk said. A video of the rocket shows it launching from a floating platform in NY and heading to space and reaching a maximum speed more than 16,000 miles per hour before touching down in Shanghai just 39 minutes later.
In the example shown in the video, passengers in NY would hop aboard a ferry that would take them to the launch pad further out into the Atlantic Ocean. Musk said, before showing a simulation video of how it could possibly work. Then, if all goes according to plan, in 2024 it will send two more cargo ships plus two crewed ships to the surface.
For the approximately six-month, one-way trips to Mars, the SpaceX ships would have 40 cabins, ideally with two to three people per cabin for a grand total of about 100 passengers.
