2-Minute Drill: Iowa State Cyclones at Oklahoma Sooners
Lanning acted as a spy on Oklahoma’s Heisman candidate quarterback, Baker Mayfield throughout the game on defense.
In Week 2, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield planted an OU flag at midfield of Ohio Stadium after the Sooners knocked off Ohio State. It was just Iowa State’s second victory over Oklahoma since 1961, and the Cyclones (3-2, 1-1 Big 12) did it without their starting quarterback.
And here is Oklahoma, whose clear path to the College Football Playoff is now ruined, as are its 14-game winning streak – longest in the nation – and 17-game Big 12 winning streak.
At least the Big 12 is used to it, though. Late in the third quarter, Mayfield and running back Trey Sermon mishandled an exchange at the ISU 5-yard line and Lanning recovered.
Oklahoma went into Saturday’s game as overwhelming favorites, which was to be expected since they are now the No. 3 team in the country.
The Cyclones completed a thrilling 38-31 upset of the Sooners and placed an exclamation point on the day by planting the state of Iowa flag at the 50. It was a ninth-straight win for Clemson in the head-to-head meeting of ACC rivals, but the defending national champions did lose QB Kelly Bryant (ankle) – nothing serious, according to head coach Dabo Sweeney – to injury in the third quarter.
All three College Football Playoff fields have included three teams with a loss on their resume, but no playoff field has featured a team with two losses.
Iowa State had done the unthinkable. The injuries are less of an excuse for this loss and more of a commentary on how little depth the Sooners have that they were unable to overcome this adversity vs Iowa State at home.
Coach Matt Campbell gave one of the biggest fist pumps throughout the entire season after that failed fourth down conversion and the Iowa State bench erupted into a thunderous cheer.
Iowa State’s run defense has been a surprising bright spot for the Cyclones this season. Iowa State ends the season with games against Baylor and Kansas State.
“This is just a journey”, Campbell said.
