The Anaheim Hills Fire as Seen From Around Southern California

Strong winds, with gusts in excess of 70 miles per hour, sent hot embers flying from home to home and the fire quickly spread. At least four homes were completely gutted by the flames. So far, they killed at least 10 people, destroyed 1,500 structures, and scorched more than 65,000 acres. It started off of East Santa Ana Canyon Road, west of Gypsum Canyon and has burned 4,000 acres and at least half a dozen homes.

Lisa Amador, a spokeswoman with Sutter Health, said around 9 a.m. that Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital had finished evacuating the last of more than 80 patients in surgical, labor and emergency care. An information hotline was set up at (714) 765-4333. The orders were then extended to Nohl Ranch Road and Canyon Rim.

The cancelations were first reported by the Orange County Register.

[O] vernight conditions – with winds dying down a bit and the humidity increasing – helped out, said Sgt. Daron Wyatt, spokesman for both the Anaheim Police Department and Anaheim Fire & Rescue.

One of the other schools with cancelations, El Modena, has transformed its gym into a Red Cross evacuation center. Even Disneyland in Anaheim affected by the fire.

The Orange Unified School District has suspended its afternoon sports for Monday.

Of note, the coastal marine layer that typically brings with it low-lying clouds and higher humidities was apparent Tuesday morning.

“We understand that you want to stay in your homes, but you make it more hard for the firefighters”, Wyatt said. About 1,100 firefighters were assigned to the incident, with 14 helicopters and six planes assisting from the air.

Fire crews are scrambling to protect structures. Eastbound lanes of the 91 at Weir Canyon Road are also closed.

“Or Ortega Highway if you’re down south, ” Olivera said.

Officials said at a Tuesday morning press conference that officials are evaluating the evacuation areas and may allow some people to return to their homes Tuesday evening.
