YouTube making virtual reality push, promising 3-D support for new 360-degree
The app has a “streamlined design”, YouTube says, with three main pathways: a personalized home page, a subscriptions page for channels that users have signed up for, and an account page. The application will be available for Android operating system based devices, and iOS version of the application will be released later. Thus the feature that would bring the most gratification is that now the vertical videos can be viewed in full screen mode same as that in horizontal (landscape) mode. Wojcicki said this feature is coming soon, and will build on YouTube’s current support for 360-degree videos. YouTube continues to grow despite all of the new competition it faces from Facebook and others that followed it into the video market.
Wojcicki championed YouTube’s growth over the past year, including a 60% upshot in time spent on site – the new metric by which YouTube is measuring the success of its creators. Two new YouTube Spaces will be added in Toronto and Mumbai, and will be open next year.
“We’re finally in an era where the diversity on the screen reflects the diversity of our era” “With YouTube you are able to stay true to yourself and find an audience as passionate as you are”.
YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki unveiled the app this week at VidCon, adding, “We’re focused on three top priorities: mobile, mobile and mobile!”
Wojcicki has revealed that YouTube beats every cable network in the US at reaching the 18-to-49 years old category of demographic.
The announcement could not come at a better time as many companies attribute increasingly more attention to virtual reality technology.
One of the reasons for Youtube‘s astounding growth this year has been increase in revenue of their video creators, which is up by 50 percent compared to last year. What’s important, she said, is that YouTube is still known as a place where new talents are born and discovered.
