Andrei Arlovski vs. Frank Mir Expected At UFC 191 In September
Andrei Arlovski and Frank Mir will indeed by fighting at UFC 191 next month, as the UFC announced during Saturday’s UFC 190 broadcast that the fight is official, and will serve as the co-main event for the Labor Day weekend card.
And somehow, all these years later, it remains just as relevant. Calls for his retirement were abundant at the time, but Arlovski persevered to win six of his next eight wins and earn a second shot in the UFC.
Despite having first entered the UFC at around the same time back in the early 2000’s, these two former champions have never fought before, so now seems like as good a time as any for them to battle it out in the Octagon. Like his soon-to-be opponent, Mir has scored two-straight first-round knockout victories over Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, and most recently Todd Duffee.
Although it’s been almost a decade since Arlovski held the heavyweight title, he’s made a once-unthinkable return to contention with his current five-fight winning streak and a 9-1 run (with one no-contest) in his past 11 fights.
Scoring a win over a top-ranked fighter like Arlovski would undoubtedly sky rocket Mir towards the top of the now quite intriguing heavyweight division. He is now the No. 10 ranked heavyweight in the UFC’s media-generated rankings.
If it does get officially booked for UFC 191, Arlovski Vs Mir may well end up as the co-main event for the show which is now headlined by a flyweight title rematch between Demetrious Johnson and John Dodson.
